Which is the reason why we don’t remember that these moments even existed during intricate times; times when the rhythm is too indolent and ambiance is dreary, bitter and silent. LOL! So, Sorel, did you find the "perfect muslim Sudanese woman" yet?I think you're starting off all wrong.. It's not about the nationality really! There is good and bad every where! I don't mean to diss my women, or disappoint you but it's pretty difficult to find what you're looking for, not only in Sudan, but every where. Sudan being an "Islamic State" is something more political and less related to the poeple. Yes, the majority are Muslims, but that does not mean they are all perfect Muslims.I know many beautiful, intelligent and religious Sudanese women, however I know much more who are not, and that does not make them less of women than the rest..Good luck finding what you're looking for

It's very nice to see you again after such a long time..It's true this place is as good as dead, and although many of us always talked and had plans to revive it, but I guess facebook and twitter are winning the game. To whoever reads my posts, I just ask if you're going to follow this post that you keep an open mind while reading. I am not an athiest, I am only a man reflecting what he has seen with his own eyes for 36 years. This is the closest to my life's story as it will ever get, but the point of this post is to ponder over many things, things I have seen in my life that have affected me somehow, as indeed many happenings in your life had made you stop and think about them, about your self and about those around you.

This will be a multi part post, you cannot cover 36 years in a few pages, and believe me, I have lived a full life so far, have done things you could only imagine, and some things even your imagination couldn't think of. Just think about what you will read in this post with an open mind and don't prejudge me please.

"Come on let's go do the wodoo' and pray" said someone after the Azaan had stopped calling out for prayer, and everyone sitting around that table got up and made their way to the abareeg, a long nosed plastic jug used to hold liquid that people in my country fill with water and use to prepare themselves for prayer. I watched as my friends stood side by side, with their arms held around their chests as in almost perfect unison they began praying, a sight I had seen many times throughout our friendship, a sight I see every day I walk down the roads of the peaceful city of Khartoum, a sight I would never wish to forget...

As a child growing up in my father's home my parents used to take my sister and I to church every Friday. We would attend bible classes, attend the mass, have the holy communion, pray and leave. Our parents would usually spend about 30 minutes in the church yard after mass mingling with fellow church goers or friends, while I would spend those 30 minutes running around with my bible class friends or goofing off somewhere and being told off by a nun or priest. I remember I didn't like going to church, preferring to do more 'fun' stuff on the only day off I get from school. Back then we only had one day off, Friday as the weekend, and I wanted to spend it playing with my Atari or football with my friends than go to church. I found an excuse every weekend to avoid going to church, and usually my excuses failed, except on the Fridays my father was working at the hospital, and Glory be, I spent the weekend the way I enjoyed best. This kept on until I reached age 12 and my father started treating me like a man, respecting my wish of not wanting to join them going to church.

At a very early age I remembered my friend Alaa had asked me if I was Sonna or Sheit, and not knowing what that was I had asked my mother to clarify, my mother had explained to me that Sonna and Sheiya are Muslim, while we are Christian, and that both are the same, except that Muslims were Mohammedan followers and Christians were Jesus followers. "So what's the difference if we are the same?" I had asked her. "Nothing, what is taboo in Christianity is also taboo in Islam and we all worship the same God" was her reply, and it had stuck to my head ever since. Since we were growing up in a Muslim country naturally there was no alcohol sold in the markets, not that it mattered. Both my parents didn't drink and I know that because it was customary back then for Sheiks and Diplomats to send my father bottles of Scotch as gifts of occasions like Christmas or Easter, bottles that he would give to friends he knew did drink. As for school we were all taught the same thing except when it was time for religion class non Muslims would take extra English or Gym class.

Back then I didn't know there were also Jews who believed in the same God too. Neither did I know there were non believers or followers of other faiths. I believed the world revolved around me like any 7 year old does, and my life went smoothly with the knowledge that religion wasn't a problem. I was not interested in God to the extent that I pray every night, and as far as I was concerned God wasn't interested in me either.

Growing up in a multi racial environment I wasn't aware of racial or religious differences. My teachers treated my fellow classmates and I equally, my parents treated all their friends and relations equally and they didn't have any preferences when it came to race or religion. Their friends were Christians, Muslims (both branches), Hindu, and my friends and I treated each other equally, Egyptians, Koreans, Kuwaities, Palestinians regardless of religion. That was until the year 1990, the year of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. My family had been residing in Kuwait since 1976 and it was home to me. Having left my home country at the age of 10 months Kuwait was the only country I knew I belonged to, not knowing what Sudan was like, and not knowing what my aunts, uncles and cousins were like, except for those that visited us in Kuwait. My only memory of Sudan was that at age 6 our parents took us to visit family members and see our mother land, during which time I remember I had a fight with my cousin George and beat him up, I went to my father's home in Omdurman that smelled like dust, and upon our return to Kuwait I fell sick and my medication (Chloroquin, used to treat Malaria) had to be flown out to Kuwait. Back then I didn't see any difference in skin colour, and didn't know that later the colour of my skin would be my awakening.

On August 2nd 1990 Iraq invaded Kuwait, and on November 20th my family and I left Kuwait due to the war. We arrived in Sudan November 29th 1990, spending 9 days on the road, and upon arrival at Khartoum airport I was called Halabi for the first time (Halabi, term originating from the city Halab, or Aleppo, in Syria, that people in Sudan use to refer to white people). I was 15, and not understanding what the word meant I looked to my father for answers but non came. My parents just exchanged glances that I didn't understand, so I never asked again...

To Be Continued
